Outlook 8/27/04:
As harvests continue, growers are experiencing seasonal volume fluctuations typical of summer. Years of low markets in the summer months have forced growers to do less speculative planting, thus decreasing overall acreage of many commodities. The decrease causes some fluctuation in volume from shipper to shipper. With schools starting up across the country and local/regional harvests winding down, demand for produce is expected to increase.
The lettuce market is jumping upward as quality and head weights decline. Lettuce shipments could be limited over the next few weeks causing volatile lettuce prices to persist. The major hurricane that hit Florida has likely done extensive damage to the orange crop and could delay the fall tomato harvest as well.
