Market Trends Updated 8/27/04

Lettuce, Romaine & Leaf Lettuce
Lighter volume from the Salinas Valley is expected over the next few weeks, but supplies look to remain adequate for demand. Warm inland temperatures will increase the likelihood of heat related defects (growth crack, discolored cap weak tip and fringe burn). The market is active with prices currently on the high side.

Strawberries
Light to moderate volume has prices on the rise. Quality is inconsistent but generally good. Potential quality issues; misshapen and crease along with occasional bruise, bronzing and seedy fruit. Prices are a bit on the high side.

Broccoli
Supplies remain a bit ahead of schedule in most growing areas allowing for the possibility of supply shortages as we move into late summer acreage. Quality is generally fair to fairly good. Prices are favorable.

Tomatoes
Strong supplies coming out of Florida and local growing areas have kept the market strong. Recent rain on the east coast has stirred up the market. Quality is good on all sizes. Prices are slightly higher but remain favorable.

Berries
Good supplies, quality and sizing on blueberries, blackberries and raspberries are keeping the market fairly steady. Strong blueberry demand has resulted in higher prices. Raspberry and Blackberry prices are more favorable.

Summer & Zucchini Squash
Yellow squash supplies have become extremely tight due to poor weather conditions. To add to the problem Michigan is also starting harvest late due to the weather. Prices will continue to rise as supplies become increasingly tighter. Quality is currently good. Zucchini squash is more affordable but prices are expected to increase as well.

Grapes
Good supplies of grapes are keeping prices steady and favorable. Quality remains good.

Peppers
The pepper market is active with prices holding at favorable levels. Quality is excellent across the board.

Cucumbers
Supplies are tight with fair quality. East Coast cucumbers are getting harder to find. Canada and Michigan are currently the main suppliers. Prices are higher but affordable.

Melons
Supplies of Cantaloupe and Honeydews are decent with excellent demand and quality. The market is stable.

Asparagus
Prices are easing with increased supplies. Supplies of larger size asparagus remain tight and have resulted in higher prices.

Stone Fruit
Domestic stone fruit harvests continue with good quality and supplies of Peaches and Plums. Nectarine harvests are producing light supplies as growers hit a bit of a gap between varieties. Overall, quality is good.

Carrots
The market is active due to tighter supplies in Georgia and Mexico. Overall, quality remains good.
